A joke about punctuation has been named the funniest in a competition run by the Beano comic.
The winning joke came from Year 5 students at Riverley Primary School in Leyton, London. Their joke was: “What do you call the fanciest punctuation? An a-posh-trophe.”
Their teacher, Maisha Mahfuza, was also awarded the title of Britain’s Funniest Teacher.
The winners will be featured in this week’s 4,290th edition of the Beano. The artwork will be drawn by the well-known artist Nigel Parkinson.
A panel of expert gag makers at the comic chose their top 10 favorite jokes from many entries. The final winner was then decided by a public vote.
Mike Stirling, the Beano’s director of mischief, said, “Beano is the only comic where kids are in charge. It continues to celebrate childhood with fun, screen-free activities.”
He added, “This yearly competition helps bring summer fun and highlights the next generation of comedy talent. The winning joke is creative, cheeky, and very funny. It made us laugh out loud.”
Ms. Mahfuza said, “Seeing our class and joke in Beano was amazing. The Britain’s Funniest Class competition is a great way to bring laughter, encourage creativity, and boost children’s confidence.”
She added, “Learning should always be fun. How many people can say they made the whole country laugh beyond the classroom?”
The winning school will receive the official Beano “Britain’s Funniest Class” trophy, Gnasher badges, and comic subscriptions for every student in the class.
Other jokes in the top 10 included:
“What’s the cleverest school dinner? Maths potato.”
“Why did the shark have a stomachache? Because it ate a school dinner.”
“What’s the difference between Dennis and Gnasher? Dennis wears shorts and Gnasher pants.”
“What’s the opposite of a dandelion? A BeanoTiger.”
“Why did the chicken cross the road? Be-CAAWWW-se.”
