‘A-Posh-Trophe’ Pun Earns London Students a Fancy Trophy

by Diana Ward

A joke about punctuation has been named the funniest in a competition run by the Beano comic.

Year 5 pupils at Riverley Primary School in Leyton, east London, won the top prize with their joke: “What do you call the fanciest punctuation? An a-posh-trophe.”

Their class teacher, Maisha Mahfuza, was also named Britain’s funniest teacher.

The winning joke will be featured in this week’s 4,290th edition of the Beano. The artwork will be created by the well-known artist Nigel Parkinson.

A group of expert gag writers from the comic first chose their 10 favorite jokes from many submissions. Then, the final winner was decided by a public vote.

Mike Stirling, the Beano’s director of mischief, said: “Beano is the only comic where kids take the lead. It celebrates childhood with fun and creativity, away from screens. This competition helps make summer fun and highlights the next generation of comedy stars.

“This joke is clever, funny, and made us laugh out loud.”

Ms. Mahfuza said: “It was amazing to see our class and joke featured in Beano. The Britain’s Funniest Class competition is a great way to bring laughter, encourage creativity, and build children’s confidence.

“Learning should always be fun. And how many people can say their joke made the whole country smile?”

The winning school will receive the official Beano “Britain’s Funniest Class” trophy. Each student will get a Gnasher badge and a subscription to the comic.

Other jokes in the top 10 included:

“What’s the cleverest school dinner? Maths potato.”

“Why did the shark have a stomach ache? Because it ate a school dinner.”

“What’s the difference between Dennis and Gnasher? Dennis wears shorts and Gnasher pants.”

“What’s the opposite of a dandelion? A BeanoTiger.”

“Why did the chicken cross the road? Be-CAAWWW-se.”
