Dakota Johnson Jokes Madame Web’s Box Office Flop Was ‘Not Her Fault’

by Diana Ward

Dakota Johnson has spoken about the negative response her film Madame Web received after its release last year.

The Fifty Shades of Grey star played the lead role of Cassandra Webb in the Spider-Man spin-off. The movie also starred Sydney Sweeney and Isabela Merced from The Last of Us.

When Madame Web came out, critics largely criticized the film. It also performed poorly at the box office.

In a recent interview with the LA Times, Dakota joked about the film’s failure. She said, “It wasn’t my fault.”

She explained, “Nowadays, many creative decisions are made by committees or by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body. It’s really hard to make art or something entertaining this way. Unfortunately, Madame Web started as one thing and ended up being something else. I was just along for the ride. But that happens. Big-budget movies fail all the time.”

Dakota added, “I’m not bitter about it. I’m not saying, ‘I’ll never do this again.’ I’ve done smaller movies that didn’t do well. It’s no big deal.”

Soon after the film’s release, Dakota said she was “not surprised” by the harsh criticism.

“It was a learning experience,” she said. “Of course, it’s never nice to be part of something that gets torn apart. But I understand why it happened.”

Before Madame Web, Dakota told Entertainment Weekly that she had never worked on a movie with so much CGI and special effects.

She said, “I’d never done a film where you act with a blue screen and fake explosions. Someone would shout, ‘Explosion!’ and you had to pretend it was real. That felt crazy to me. I wasn’t sure if the movie would turn out well. I just hoped I did a good job.”
