The Season 50 finale of Weekend Update’s semi-annual joke swap featured everything fans expect — and more. Colin Jost appeared in bright red lipstick, there was a humorous apology for a previous “roast beef” joke, and Scarlett Johansson made a special appearance.
Johansson, who is Colin Jost’s wife, joined the show to receive an apology from Michael Che. The apology was for a joke Che made Jost say during their Christmas joke swap. However, Che found other ways to tease Jost throughout the segment.
The episode began as usual, with Jost and Che explaining that they would be reading jokes the other had written for them. Before starting, Jost made a playful comment directed at their boss, Lorne Michaels. “Lorne, retire, b—-! Let me run the show,” Jost said, showing that the fun had already begun.
As they shared each other’s jokes, Michael Che read off-color jokes on various topics. Then, Scarlett Johansson appeared as a guest. She had previously appeared during their December 2024 joke swap via a reaction camera.
Che took the opportunity to apologize to Johansson on air. “Scarlett, can you come out here?” he said, reading from cue cards. Johansson came out wearing jeans and a maroon blouse to hear the apology.
Che admitted he did not like apologizing but read a note written by Jost. The apology addressed jokes made about Johansson’s body. Che explained he “was just lashing out because I’m jealous.” He also made Jost say he has “more nipples than a pregnant dog,” to which Johansson replied, “Yes, I have heard that about you.”
Che then apologized to Jost, saying, “When Colin discovered me, I was selling crack outside the Bronx Zoo. Now look at me: selling crack outside the American Girl doll store!” Che added that despite telling thousands of jokes on Weekend Update, he had never said the three most important words: “I love you.”
At the end, Jost humorously applied lipstick on command and made one last plea to Lorne Michaels to let him run the show.
