Miley Cyrus made a playful comment about JoJo Siwa’s relationship with Chris Hughes, joking about “bringing her back out” of the closet.
In a video filmed during Pride Month, Cyrus, 32, shared a lighthearted message from inside a closet. “Oh, my God, I haven’t been in here since sixth grade,” she said, addressing the camera. “Enjoy coming out of the closet if this Pride is the time for you. It shouldn’t just be a month—it should be a year, it should be infinite.”
Cyrus then humorously added, “I’m going back inside to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.”
Siwa, 22, recently went public about her relationship with Chris Hughes, 32, which began after they met on the U.K. edition of Celebrity Big Brother in April. During her time on the reality show, Siwa explored her sexual identity.
“I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, but… I think being here, I’ve realized, ‘Oh no, I’m not a lesbian. I’m queer,'” Siwa said on the show. “I think that’s really cool. I’m switching letters.”
After leaving the Big Brother house, Siwa ended her relationship with her then-partner Kath Ebbs. She and Hughes sparked romance rumors after becoming close on the show.
On June 1, Hughes posted a selfie on Snapchat showing him and Siwa in bed together. The following day, Siwa confirmed that they were dating. Initially, she had described their bond as “platonic.”
“It’s not platonic anymore, and it’s been a beautiful development, a beautiful connection,” Siwa told The Guardian in an interview published June 2. “I’m absolutely head over heels for him, and he’s the same way.”
In a June 6 interview on the Rosebud With Gyles Brandreth podcast, Siwa elaborated on the relationship. “I don’t know how the universe aligned for Chris to come into my life,” she said. Reflecting on her time with Hughes on Celebrity Big Brother, Siwa explained that they didn’t plan to fall for each other. “We were just having so much fun together. Whenever one of us was down, the other would help,” she recalled.
It wasn’t until after leaving the house and ending her relationship with Ebbs that Siwa realized her feelings for Hughes were more than just platonic.
Siwa said, “I knew all these realizations about my life… things that I wasn’t happy with and things that I had been okay with but shouldn’t have been.” Over time, she admitted, “I started to feel something for Christopher that I never intended to, but I couldn’t not feel.”
