Sc Issues Notice To Samay Raina And 4 Others Over ‘Insensitive Jokes’

by Diana Ward

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to comedians Samay Raina, Vipin Goyal, and three others over their alleged insensitive jokes about people with disabilities, according to LiveLaw.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N. Kotiswar Singh has instructed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to serve a notice to the comedians, ensuring their presence in court for the next hearing. The court also called for the Attorney General of India to assist in the case, recognizing the “sensitivity and importance of the issue.”

In its petition, the Cure SMA India Foundation argued that there should be regulations to control the broadcast of online content that infringes on the rights to life and dignity of people with disabilities.

This case follows the court’s earlier remarks about regulating objectionable content on social media, which were made after the foundation raised concerns over a separate issue involving YouTuber Ranveer Allahabadia’s comments on the “India’s Got Latent” controversy. The petition related to Raina was filed after the court directed the petitioner to submit a more detailed complaint, LiveLaw reported.
