NASCAR driver Shane van Gisbergen, who is backed by Red Bull, has taken a light-hearted jab at Red Bull Racing’s recent struggles in Formula 1. The New Zealander joked that he’s “glad” he never raced for the team, following a difficult start to the 2025 season for Max Verstappen’s teammates.
Verstappen has secured two race wins this year. However, his teammates, Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, have had a tough time adapting to the RB21 car. Neither driver has matched Verstappen’s pace, raising questions about Red Bull’s second seat. Recent data shows Verstappen is effectively carrying the team alone, with Tsunoda rated as one of the least effective teammates the Dutchman has had.
“I’m glad I didn’t drive for Red Bull Racing in Formula 1 after how the first few races went,” van Gisbergen said, reflecting on the team’s troubles. He made the comment after a challenging start to his own NASCAR season, where he finished inside the top 30 only twice in his first seven races.
Grateful for Patience and Support in NASCAR
Van Gisbergen currently races for Trackhouse Racing in NASCAR. Though new to the series, he was signed to compete on road courses—non-oval tracks where his background gives him an edge. NASCAR’s playoff system rewards race winners with a spot in the top sixteen. After securing victory in Mexico City, van Gisbergen is now likely to advance—unless more than sixteen drivers each win a race this season.
After the win, van Gisbergen praised team owner Justin Marks for his patient approach. He contrasted it with the high-pressure environment of Formula 1.
“Justin has been awesome,” he said. “He supported me, gave me all the time I needed, and didn’t put any pressure on me. It was really cool.”
The 36-year-old’s remarks highlight the difference in team culture between NASCAR and Formula 1, while his performance shows he is quickly finding his footing in the American racing series.
