The recent American upbringing of Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has captured widespread attention, including a segment on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update on May 10, hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che.
Jost kicked off the discussion with a joke about conservatives criticizing the pope for being “too woke.” He humorously asked, “How woke can a 69-year-old man from Chicago be? It’s not like he came out and was like, ‘Hey, I’m Pope Leo the 14th, he/him.’”
The segment then took a turn when Che mentioned an AI-generated image of President Donald Trump dressed as the Pope. He jokingly remarked, “I just find it hard to believe that anyone in the Catholic Church would be into something so juvenile,” causing the crowd to erupt in laughter. Jost was left speechless for a moment, adding to the comedic moment.
Che then shifted focus to Trump’s controversial plan to impose a 100% tariff on foreign-made films. This move has sparked confusion and frustration in Hollywood. Che joked, “No problem for me because all the movies I watched were filmed in a Florida condo on a leather couch.”
The jokes against Trump didn’t stop there. When discussing Trump’s idea of reopening Alcatraz, Che quipped that the island “represents something horrible and beautiful and strong and miserable and weak,” also describing these qualities as Trump’s “nicknames for his five children.”
Later, Marcello Hernández returned as The Movie Guy to review recent box office hits, including “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie.” Teasing the upcoming “Jurassic World Rebirth,” starring Scarlett Johansson, Hernández jokingly mispronounced her name as “Carley Sohanson.”
When Jost pointed out that Johansson is his wife, Hernández quipped, “And my wife is Rihanna!” The audience roared with laughter, prompting Jost to joke, “I don’t like how hard you guys are laughing.”
