During the May 22 episode of Today With Jenna & Friends, Jenna Bush Hager made Savannah Guthrie laugh with a playful comment about her on-air behavior.
The two friends were discussing their shared admiration for author Judy Blume. Guthrie, 53, began to talk about what she had learned about life and hinted at “the birds and the bees.” Before she could continue, Bush Hager, 43, interrupted and asked if Guthrie could say the word “sex” on air. Guthrie responded that she could.
Bush Hager then joked, “She’s kind of repressed. Go ahead. Can you say sex?” Guthrie admitted she was “very repressed” and hesitated before saying the word. She asked if she really had to say it, saying, “I think we know what we’re talking about.” But eventually, she said “sex.”
Bush Hager applauded her, saying, “Wow, I’m so proud of you,” while Guthrie laughed and received applause from the show’s crew.
Their conversation continued with Guthrie trying to use the topic of sex as a transition to a story about a New York news anchor who went into labor live on air. Guthrie asked if that was her transition, and Bush Hager joked back, “Well, that’s how you get pregnant, in case they didn’t explain everything to you.” Guthrie then added that she had two children: a daughter, Vale, 10, and a son, Charley, 8. She shares them with her husband, Michael Feldman. Bush Hager has three children—Mila, 12, Poppy, 9, and Hal, 5—with her husband, Henry Hager.
Earlier in the show, Guthrie said she was a bit jealous of Bush Hager’s connection to Judy Blume, who is 87. “I don’t usually get jealous, but I’m jealous that you have met Judy Blume,” Guthrie said.
Bush Hager then recalled a recent Zoom call she had with Blume about turning the book Summer Sisters into a TV show. The call was interrupted by her eldest daughter.
