Fritz Coleman’s Jokes as a Retired Channel 4 Forecaster Landed Perfectly

by Diana Ward

In his show Unassisted Living, comedian Fritz Coleman has transitioned from weather forecasting to making jokes about it. On April 27, he performed to a sold-out crowd at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, where his humor was tailored to an older audience.

“I’m currently using a pill caddy for my medication,” Coleman joked. “You know, the one with the days of the week on it. Just last year, I was using it for fishing tackle.”

The audience at the Monroe Forum, the El Portal’s 1,400-seat theater, laughed along with Coleman’s jokes. “How about the old guy who thinks he’s an athlete?” he quipped. “He wears a speedo over Depends.”

Comedian Wendy Liebman, known for her specials on HBO, Showtime, and Comedy Central, also performed. A semi-finalist on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, Liebman complemented Coleman’s act by poking fun at herself.

“My doctor suggested hormones to spice up my sex life,” she joked. “But I don’t need hormones, I’ll just take acting lessons.”

After the show, both comics mingled with the audience, posing for photos, signing autographs, and chatting with fans. Coleman took a brief moment to speak with CV Weekly and shared his thoughts on retirement.

“I don’t have the pressures anymore. I just relax,” he said. “Comedy is important. People want to escape their worries. It takes some of the fear out of life.”

Coleman is looking to take Unassisted Living on the road and recently received word that his monthly show has secured a permanent spot at El Portal. His next performance is scheduled for Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m., with proceeds benefiting the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund.
