Chris Evans Jokes Recent Roles Hurt His Acting Career

by Diana Ward

Chris Evans said goodbye to his role as Captain America in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame. Since then, the actor has taken on new roles with mixed results. He impressed audiences with his villainous role in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. However, many of his recent films have not done as well.

Pixar’s Lightyear was enjoyable but did not perform as expected at the box office. The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by the Russo Brothers, was seen as a costly disappointment. Other movies like Ghosted, Pain Hustlers, and Red One also received mostly negative reviews.

Like fellow superhero actor Tom Holland, Evans has found it hard to match the success he had as Captain America. But his new film, Materialists, which stars Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson alongside him, could mark a comeback.

In a recent interview, the three actors were asked whether they would rather relive their most awkward interview moments or choose each other’s movie roles. Evans joked, “I’d always put you [both] in the movies I’m doing… ruin both those careers [laughs].” It suggests Evans might need a new agent, as many believe he deserves better projects than those he has had recently.

Fans also hope for another team-up with Ryan Reynolds. Evans’s cameos in Free Guy and Deadpool & Wolverine are among his best work since Avengers: Endgame. Evans previously shared how much he enjoyed his role as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. He said, “It was so great. I have a lot of love in my heart for Johnny Storm… Getting to yell flame on again was just special. I really loved every second.”

Despite reprising the Human Torch, Evans remains clear that his time as Captain America is finished. He said, “Those were wonderful times and probably the dearest role to my heart, but it might be better just to let those times be those times.”

There is speculation that Evans could return as Steve Rogers in upcoming films Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Rumors suggest he might play a villainous version of Captain America called “HYDRA Cap,” who teams up with Doctor Doom. However, this has not been confirmed.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will come out on December 17, 2027.
